The Bachelors of Broken Hill Farm A Project of Documentaries
I like to tell unusual stories. Sometimes they are funny. Sometimes they are sad. Sometimes they are both. And sometimes they are based on real people. I found one story I liked about a troubled man. But then I discovered a better story about the troubled man's brother. His name was Frank and lived with his lover and writing partner John. I was able to locate a person who knew John's neighbor in the Berkshires of Massachusetts. I contacted the neighbor who told me he had 3 boxes filled with hundreds of photos, theater playbills, press clippings, diaries and a thousand love letters written during WWII.
The Neighbor told me he didn't know what to do with them. I did. Two years - and many road trips later - I have a truly interesting, love story of Frank Provo and John Pickard that spans 4 decades from the 1930s to the 1970s.
The Bachelors of Broken Hill Farm is a feature length documentary (70 minutes) that brings to life in vivid detail their life as actors and soap opera writers in the Golden Age of Radio and television. However, their greatest success was not on the boards of Broadway or the Hollywood Hills, but in a closeted, domestic and creative partnership.
In this documentary, there are no talking heads. The script is based on letters, interviews and diaries of Frank, John, their friends and family - and brought to life by professional actors. It is visually told through hundreds of archival film clips and photographs from their personal archives.
My pitch to you is simple.
If you love pop culture - theater history, queer history - and are interested in unusual biographies, won't you please give a tax deductible donation to my project, no donation is too small! and all donors will be thanked in the screen credits.
The money raised will help with production costs such as restoring old negatives, licensing film clips, the sound recording, and the final online edit.
I have a fiscal sponsor and won a grant from The Arch and Bruce Brown Foundation. I have producing and fundraising experience and know with your help, I can complete this project in 2018.
Thank you so much for your time and dime!
